The good thing is, that you do not need to make backup since you'll not replace any gamefile.
What you need:
CPK Tool
Bayonetta DDS Extract Tool
NVidia DDS Plugin for Photoshop
CPK Tool:
1. Open CPKTools.exe
2. Browse the .cpk file you want to extract
3. Create a random folder
4. Browse the previously created folder with the CPK Tool as the Save Path
5. Press 'Decompress' button and wait for the program to do it's job. You'll get a Prompt message: Extraction Complete
Note: You won't need the repacking feature of the CPK Tool, because you can leave the original .cpk untuched.
Bayonetta DDS Extract Tool:
1. Open the program then drag & drop a .dat file into the first window. Example: pl0000.dat (Default Bayonetta Costume)
2. Create a folder and drag & drop that folder into the second window
3. Press the dat→→dds button and leave the program open
Note: The program creates a folder "Output_dds" inside the previously chosen folder
4. With Photoshop open a file. Example: 0012_pl0010(DXT5)9.dds (Bayonetta's face)
5. Edit the texture.
6. Save with these settings:
- DXT5
- Generate MIP Maps
- In the window next to "Use existing mip maps" select 9
Note: In the texture's name, you can see the DXT setting and the MIP Map number. You have to save it with those settings. Some DXT1 textures have Alpha Channel. Save them using DXT1 1-bit Alpha setting.
7. Return to the Bayonetta DDS Tool you left open
8. Press the dds→→dat button
9. The tool creates a folder named "Output_dat" with the modified .dat file inside
10. Create a folder named "pl" in the game's data folder. Like this: Bayonetta\data\pl
Note: If the .dat file you edited came from a "wp" folder then you need to paste it here: Bayonetta\data\wp
11. Copy & Paste the modified .dat file there and play the game!
