BASIC RULES:
- Include precise instructions. Seriously. Either in a readme or in your post, and preferrably both.
- Post pictures or a video.
- Post a download link to your mod. I mean it's kinda obvious to do when you release a mod. And no, please don't repost link(s) for mod(s) released on other sites and call it a mod release.
- Ask for permission if you're gonna use other people's work.
MOD THEFT/FRAUD RULES:
If you think a mod includes stolen work from other people, or is illegal or fraudulent in any other way,
PM one of the administrators or moderators telling especifically what you are accusing the mod maker of, and provide as much evidence as possible.
DO NOT START A FLAME WAR. At most, you can make a post warning people that the mod is a fraud.
If the evidence is compelling, the thread will get locked and we will contact the maker, then an audition of the mod will be made.
Action will be taken according to the result of the audition, ranging from unlocking the thread if the mod is legit, to deleting the topic and possibly banning the guilty party if the fraud is verified, depending on the seriousness of it and past ocurrencies.
Just remember, DON'T STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK, goddamnit. Ask them for their permission if you want to use parts of their mods, it's simple and painless.
Addendum (by Vertigo):
@everyone making a mod theft/fraud claim:
I can understand that use of your work without permission or credit given can be infuriating. It -has- happened to me and people that I know, so I understand how angry people can get over this. However, I suggest that when it comes to such reporting, please notify omni, myself, or any of the moderators and let us handle your claims. The problem with settling this in public discussion is that it's not only stressful for those involved in the claim, but it also causes more issues for us site staff when they do occur. There are a number of reasons why I would suggest you do so, but here are three:
- The first reason why is because we can control the board. We therefore have greater capacity to sort out your claim efficiently by locking down the relevant threads, etc. until the investigation is completed.
- Second, by going through us, we make the process less stressful for you, as a claimant. While it's tempting to argue out your case with the offending party, it can often get stressful for both parties and often results in flame warring, which then causes problems for us, as site staff, since we then have to try and resolve the issue after it's started.
- Third, if it turns out that (as we found out this time), there are cases in which use of other mod assets can happen due to honest mistake as opposed to outright deliberate use of another's work without permission or credit given. As an admin, I feel that it's not worth having valuable members of our community falling out over things like this. Again, that's why us site staff are around - to resolve such situations in a calm and civil manner so people aren't getting angry at each other over a simple misunderstanding.
In my honest opinion, IW is a fairly civil community as far as the rest of the Internet is concerned, and I'd like to keep it that way. If there are problems, just report them and let us site staff sort it out.
I mean, that -IS- what we're here for.
